Cambodian Dreaming

Sponsorship Form

Free a child from poverty.....

....for less than a dollar a day!

How does NEPCAM work?

How much does this cost?

When will it start?

When do I pay?

How can I pay?

Can I select my child?

While government education in Cambodia is supposedly free, teachers are paid a very low wage and sometimes can go months without receiving their salary. As a result, teachers charge each child a 'fee' of between 50c and $1 a day to pay for various services including lessons, photocopies and exam fees. Unfortunately, many poor families in Cambodia earn less than $50 a month, so although the parents know that education is a stepping stone out of poverty, priorities such as food and shelter take precedence and education is often out of their reach.

As the town of Siem Reap is a major tourist destination attracting over two million visitors every year, competence in English will increase the students’ opportunities for employment in their local area. Few government schools provide this service and private schools charge high fees which poor families are unable to afford. Your generous donation to NEPCAM of $30 per month will support a child attending primary or secondary school and will ensure that the student you sponsor will receive a free education in all subjects, including Khmer, English, maths and computer technology. This support can continue, if appropriate, until the student finishes school in Year 12.

Your donation will pay for the government school fees as well as daily English lessons at a reputable English school. It will also pay for the child's school uniform (blouse/shirt, skirt/shorts/trousers and socks and shoes if needed) and school supplies. (text books, notebooks, pens, pencils, etc.) Importantly, in a country where free medical attention is practically non-existent and where people die from treatable ailments, your sponsorship funds will also provide the child and his or her family with access to free medical assistance from local Khmer staff and Western volunteer doctors and nurses.

How does NEPCAM work?

NEPCAM's child sponsorship programs started in 2007. In 2010 we have formed a partnership with an organisation called New Hope Cambodia,  (www.newhopecambodia.com) which is a locally registered, on-ground, Non-Government Organisation (NGO) based in Siem Reap, Cambodia.

New Hope has just recently opened its own school, (catering for up to 750 children) a new, fully equipped medical centre and a training restaurant. New Hope’s Outreach Centre provides on-going and emergency support to families in the local district. Services available for the families at the Outreach Centre include counselling and emergency food and shelter.

After NEPCAM has identified a sponsor in Australia and established the sponsor’s preference for a boy or girl and an approximate age group for the student, we notify New Hope Cambodia who then send NEPCAM a profile of a child. This profile is then forwarded to the sponsor and the sponsorship begins.

Can I select my child?

You can tell us whether you would prefer to select a boy or a girl to sponsor and you can also tell us what age bracket you would prefer your sponsored child to be in at the start (7-9, 10-12 or 13-15). Once we receive your email confirming you wish to proceed, we will contact our on-ground business partner and request them to nominate a child for you. The child will then be selected using the following selection criteria:

·     the child comes from poor economic circumstances
·     has a caring mother who values education and who will encourage the child while he or she is at school
·     is willing to attend school regularly and is determined to try his or her best to achieve good results

In effect, a NEPCAM sponsorship means a sponsor is linked to a specific child such that his or her future education can be supported and closely monitored through indirect regular contact (letters, emails, photo, school attendance reports and academic progress reports) and that there is an opportunity to visit the child and the relevant school.

Please be aware that NEPCAM has policies in place for all sponsor-child contact which are compliant with the guidelines set down by ACFID. For further information about communicating with or visiting your sponsored child, please contact the NEPCAM Child Protection Officer at: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. .

Alternatively, you can go to our webpage 'Contact your sponsored child' which will provide you with further information.
